The development and applications of nuclear science and technology have been initiated since 1958 and thus, The National Atomic Energy Agency was established in Indonesia. Since then, the wider applications of nuclear science and technology continue to be developed and provide benefits to the wider community. This was marked by the establishment of various nuclear facilities and infrastructure including regulations, management systems, and a number of standard operating procedures. Several research reactors, irradiators, accelerators, and, nuclear-based services for the health and industrial sectors have been established and are being developed. In the future, it is expected that mastery of nuclear science and technology can be a potential medium for Indonesia’s transformation from a developing country to a highly developed country. In addition to the need for continuity and improvement of the government’s nuclear organization, to become a nuclear nation, all research and development needs to be well planned, coordinated, and synergized with all stakeholders. Therefore, a forum is needed to facilitate academics, researchers, students, engineers, government officials, and the general public to communicate and discuss the latest progress, practices, and challenges related to nuclear science and technology.

The International Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology, and Application (ICONSTA) which is held annually is a series of conference activities that can represent the development and achievements of nuclear science and technology in Indonesia. The conference is a forum for stakeholders both from within and outside the country and ultimately increases the capabilities and prospects for the role of nuclear science and technology, in creating superior innovations that are beneficial to the nation in particular and the world community in general. This year (2024), the Indonesian Nuclear Society (HIMNI), in collaboration with the Research Organization for Nuclear Energy, and the National Research and Innovation Agency of Indonesia (ORTN-BRIN), organized the ICONSTA 2024.

The conference’s theme is “Opportunities and Challenges of Nuclear Science and Technology for A Better Future”. In this conference, the scope of the conference will be expanded to cover socio-technical aspects of nuclear science and technology to provide opportunities for researchers, engineers, practitioners, and social scientists to share their research findings, innovative ideas, and practical experiences in the field of nuclear science, technology, and applications for peaceful uses and improvement of public welfare. The Participation from the younger generation who will become successors in the development of nuclear science, technology, and applications in the future is highly expected.
